Why I’m running for Durham School Board

Logo with an illustration of a school building, text 'Gabby Rivero, Durham Public Schools District 3,' and a slogan 'Because Durham students deserve schools that help them thrive, not just survive.'

I am running for Durham School Board because as a proud DPS parent of 3, I want to bring transparency, care, and accountability to our public schools. Our district needs leadership that looks beyond the noise and focuses on what truly matters. Too often we react to crises without addressing their root causes.

As an entrepreneur and governance leader, I am committed to whole-child wellness, strong budget oversight, and supporting educators—so every student can thrive.

I believe in listening deeply to students, families, and educators, and responding with thoughtful, holistic solutions that support the whole child, strengthen trust, and create lasting change across Durham Public Schools.

My Experience

Education Advocacy Experience

  • More than thirteen years of experience working with public schools by supporting students, families, and educators.

  • Vice President of the PTA at Southwest Elementary and Title I Coordinator.

  • Advocate for transportation access, supporting families in crises.

Public Service and Governing Experience

  • Membership Chair of the Durham Black Chamber of Commerce

  • Member of the City of Durham’s Recreation Advisory Board. Has reviewed budgets, evaluated leadership performance, and asked hard questions about equity and impact, and pushed for transparency and accountability.

  • Experience with participatory budget and budget oversight.

Lived Experience

  • I am a Black mother to three bilingual and biracial children in the Durham Public School system and a foster parent.

  • Organized 150 parents around immigrant protection and defense.

  • Provided therapeutic healing to the most marginalized communities in Durham and experienced first-hand the disparities between schools, and lives by the values of collaboration, inclusion, and community-based problem-solving.

I am a proud DPS parent of three, a foster parent, and the founder of Express & Release Therapeutic Dance—a Durham-based organization that uses movement to support emotional expression, stress relief, and whole-person well-being.

My work with children, families, and educators has shown me how deeply student success is connected to feeling safe, supported, and understood.
